How to Extract the Audio From an AC3

AC3 audio is used to create high-quality sound on DVDs. To play and extract audio from an AC3 file you will need an AC3 codec on your computer. AC3 file formats are Dolby digital audio files that are used as the audio track for a DVD. For this reason, it is not normally possible to play just the audio track unless you have the appropriate codec installed. One simple way to play and extract an AC3 file is to convert it to a new audio file.

Step 1 Download and install Audacity.

Step 2 Open Audacity and drag the AC3 file over to the main application window. This will open your AC3 file in the player and allow you to play it back and edit it.

Step 3 Click "File." Select "Export" from the drop-down menu.

Step 4 Select an audio format in the "Format" option in the export dialog box. Use WAV or MP3 to be able to listen to the audio file on your computer.
