A Note That Refuses to Move Creates the Tension Every Cadence Depends On

A suspension is three beats of choreography: prepare, collide, resolve. How 4-3, 7-6, 9-8 and bass suspensions shape cadences, and how to hear them.

A Suspension Is Three Events Across Three Beats, Not One Tense Moment

Most of the students who send me counterpoint make the same mistakes. They write a dissonance because they want the music to sound interesting, and then attempt to force it into place. That is backwards. A suspension is not a chord you choose; it is a small piece of choreography that takes three steps to complete, and each step has a particular job, or function, to complete.

The first step prepares. 

A note arrives as a consonance, part of the harmony, and it slips in undetected. 

The second step collides.

The bass moves, the other voices move, but the tension holds steady and refused to move. The tension stayed still, so the harmony changed underneath it and left it stranded. 

The third step resolves.

The resolution moves down by step into a consonance that gives it a sense of completion.

Take the plainest version. Soprano sits on C while the bass holds F. Consonant, comfortable, a fifth apart in the middle of an implied F major chord. 

Now the bass steps up to G. The soprano does not follow. That C is now a fourth above G, a dissonance, and it aches. On the next beat the soprano falls to B, and you have a G major triad with the leading tone in the top voice, ready to cadence. That is a 4–3 suspension, and it is doing more work than any chord substitution you could invent.

The Dissonance Has to Arrive as a Consonance First, or the Ear Hears a Mistake

This is the rule that makes the whole device work, and it is the one people gloss over. The suspended note must be consonant on the beat before it becomes dissonant. If you drop a fourth in from nowhere, the listener does not hear tension; they hear a wrong note. 

Tension requires memory. The ear has to have already accepted that pitch as correct before the ground underneath begins to move.

That is also why the resolution goes down. The suspended note is being held back, not pushed. It is a voice that has fallen behind the harmony and has to catch up, and catching up means descending by step into the note it was supposed to go to if it wasn't late. Resolve it up and you get a different animal entirely — a retardation, which is a real device, but it feels like a lift rather than a release. Retardations work well in certain context, but it's the wrong technique if you want the music to sigh.

The 4–3 Sharpens a Cadence While the 9–8 Quietly Blurs It

Not all suspensions carry the same weight, and knowing the differences saves you a lot of flat-sounding cadences.

The 4–3 is the strongest because the fourth above the bass is unambiguous, and the third creates the quality of the chord. Nothing else in the texture can hide its tension. It sits there sounding wrong until it steps down to the third, and the arrival of that third feels like a door closing. Put it on the dominant of a cadence and the cadence gains a full beat of gravity straining to get home.

The 7–6 is gentler and more mobile. The seventh resolving to a sixth does not settle anything; it leans the harmony sideways into the next chord. That is why 7–6 belongs in the middle of a phrase, keeping motion alive, while 4–3 belongs at the end. 

The 9–8 is the one to be careful with. The ninth resolves down to the octave, which means it resolves onto a pitch already present in the bass. The dissonance is real, but the resolution is a doubling, and doublings can create dullness. It works when the ninth is high and exposed and the bass is far below, so the octave arrival sounds like a beam of light rather than a collapse. It fails when the voices are packed close and the resolution just thickens an already dense chord.

Put the Suspension in the Bass and the Chord Pushes Instead of Leans

Everything above assumes the upper voice is the one holding on. Reverse it. Let the bass be the voice that refuses to move while the upper voices step to their new positions, and you get a 2–3 suspension: the bass is a second below one of the upper voices, then falls to make a third.

The feeling is different because the foundation itself feels like the late arrival. In an upper-voice suspension the harmony has already changed and one voice is straggling. In a bass suspension the harmony cannot change until the bass gives permission, so the upper voices hover with their new notes already in place, waiting. It is more like a held breath than a sigh, and it works beautifully just before a phrase turns a corner. Bach uses it constantly in the second-to-last bar of a chorale phrase, right where you expect nothing interesting to happen.

Chaining Suspensions Turns Two Voices Into a Machine That Pulls Itself Forward

When you place multiple suspensions in sequence, you end up with a chain. And, it's where suspensions stop being ornaments and start being structure. Resolve a 7–6, and the note you resolved into can immediately become the preparation for the next 7–6 a step lower. Do that three times and you have a descending sequence that generates its own momentum. Do it four times, and you just killed the entire piece with predictability. Every resolution is also a setup, and the phrase cannot stop until you deliberately break the pattern.

This is the engine under a great deal of Baroque writing, and it is entirely mechanical once it becomes apparent to you. Two voices, one falling chain of suspensions, and a bass that walks down by step. You do not need a new idea for eight bars. You need one suspension and the intuition to interrupt it in ways that will make the piece create forward motion without becoming monotonous.

Your Ear Has to Finish the Resolution Before Your Pencil Writes the Dissonance

This is the part that makes suspensions a training problem, not a rules problem. If you have to check the interval to know whether a suspension will work, you are already too slow. The device lives on the beat, and by the time you have counted up from the bass, the phrase has moved on.

So practice hearing it first. Play a bass line — F, G, C, nothing fancy — and before you touch a second note, sing the suspension: the C that stays, the ache when the G arrives, the B that gives release. Sing all three beats. Then play it and check yourself. When you can hear the resolution before you have written the dissonance, you will start putting suspensions where the phrase actually wants them instead of where the exercise permits them.

That inner hearing is also what makes the difference audible in your own music. Every composer knows the rule that suspensions resolve downward. Only the ones who can audiate the resolution know which suspension the bar needed.

Write Four Bars Tonight and Make Every Downbeat Hurt a Little

Two voices. Four bars. 

Write a suspension on every strong beat, prepared on the beat before, resolved down by step. Do not add a third voice, do not change key, and do not let yourself write a bar where both voices move together on the downbeat. It will feel restrictive for about ninety seconds and then it will start sounding like music, because this is the mechanism most of the music you love is built on.
