Two Judgements Happen in the First Second, and Only One of Them Is Trained
The most common report I get from students working through ear training is remarkably consistent. They can tell instantly whether they are hearing a chord or a bare interval. Then the quiz asks which chord, and the accuracy falls apart. Nine mistakes out of twenty-four, all of them on the root.
That is not one skill failing. It is two different judgements, and only one of them has been trained. Hearing that something is a triad rather than a fifth is a texture judgement - the ear is reading thickness, the way your eye tells a crowd from a couple at a glance. Naming the root is an identity judgement, and it needs a completely different kind of attention. Students try to make both calls in the same instant, and the two judgements fight over the same second of sound. If you focus on major versus perfect fifth, the root slips away. Focus on the root, and suddenly you cannot tell what you are hearing at all.
The fix is not more repetitions of the combined question. It is separating the questions until each one is reliable on its own.
The Top of a Fifth Loves to Impersonate the Root
Before the drill, you should know what you are up against, because the fifth does not play fair. When two notes sit a perfect fifth apart, the upper note frequently feels like the foundation. The interval locks together so smoothly that the ear picks the louder or higher voice and crowns it. Students describe hearing the top note of the fifth as the root, and then doubting everything that follows.
Register makes this worse. Higher octaves carry thinner fundamentals and more prominent overtones, so the same chord that was obvious in the middle of the keyboard turns ambiguous near the top. If high chords defeat you and low ones do not, nothing is wrong with your ear. You are hearing the actual acoustics, and the training has to account for them.
Parallel motion is the other trap. When every voice moves in the same direction at once, the bass stops being a separate character and blends into one thick moving object. The root is still there. Your attention just has nothing to grab it with.
Split the Question to Train It, Rejoin It to Use It
Here is the drill, and it works because each pass asks the ear exactly one thing.
The first pass names the texture.
Chord or interval. Nothing else. You are already good at this, so it costs you two seconds and settles the easy question before it can interfere with the hard one.
The second pass sings the bottom.
Do not name anything yet. Just find the lowest voice with your own voice and sing it. Singing forces your attention to the floor of the sound, and the floor is where the root lives. If the note sits outside your range, move it an octave into your range and sing it there. The identity survives the move.
The third pass names what you sang.
Now the question is not "what is the root of this chord" - it is "what note am I singing," which is the pitch identification you have already practiced. You have turned one impossible question into two easy ones.
Run the passes separately for a week or two. Then start collapsing them: texture and bottom in one hearing, name on the second. Eventually the three passes fuse into a single act of attention, and that fused act is the skill the quiz was testing all along. Be honest about the timeline, though. The separation feels slower at first, and students abandon it right before it pays. It is not slower. It is the assembly of the thing you were trying to guess your way into.
When Your Ear Elects a New Tonic, It Is Being Musical, Not Broken
One more failure deserves naming, because it disguises itself as a defect. In an exercise built around C, G, and D, some listeners hear G as home and reinterpret everything around it - the whole drill becomes IV, V, and I in the key of G, and every answer comes out systematically wrong. That is not a broken ear. That is a musical ear doing what centuries of tonal music trained it to do: electing a tonic from the evidence and organizing everything else around it.
The remedy is to anchor the key on purpose. Before the exercise, play or sing the actual tonic and hold it in mind the way you hold a downbeat. When your ear tries to re-elect G, notice it, return to C, and continue. The noticing is the training. A listener who can feel their tonal center drifting and pull it back has a stronger ear than one who never noticed the drift at all.
Ten Minutes Tonight: One Bass Note, Three Chords
Sit at your instrument. Play a low C and sing it. Then play C major, G major, and a bare perfect fifth on C, in any order, eyes closed, and run the three passes on each: texture, bottom, name. Ten minutes. The moment it becomes easy in the middle register, move the whole exercise up an octave and watch the difficulty return - that difficulty is the next layer of the skill, not a setback.
