How to Measure a Trumpet Bell

The diameter of the bell is used for measuring a trumpet.

It's important to know how to accurately measure a trumpet bell, which is essentially the flare at the end of a trumpet because the bell largely determines the trumpet's sound. Horns with a smaller bell will have a more focused, penetrating sound while those with a larger bell will sound smoother and more mellow. Knowing the size bell you want makes it easier to select the appropriate trumpet for your goals.

Lay the trumpet flat on its side on a cloth to avoid damaging the finish. Use a ruler to measure the length from one side of the bell to the other. Make sure the ruler is in the center of the bell or your measurement will be wrong.

Write down the number in millimeters. You can also use inches, but millimeters are more commonly used. Tips Warnings
