There are several sizes of violins ranging from the full size to the one-eighth size violin. Each of these violins suits a different body type, but most adults should use the full-size violin that measures a total of 14 inches. The smallest violin measures 10 inches and should only be played by a child of 4 to 6 years of age.

Turn the violin over on its front, be careful to not damage the strings as the strings will be lying face-down. To reduce the possibility of damage to the violin, keep the violin in its case. This way, you will prevent leaving the strings exposed to any abrasive elements.

Use a tape measure to measure the length of the violin body longwise from bottom to top. Do not include the neck of the violin in the measurement. The measurement is designed to indicate only the length from one end of the body to the other, without including the neck.

Write down your measurement and consult a measurement chart to determine what measurement is closest to the number you obtained. Violins vary slightly between models so choose the measurement that is closest.
